In the Valmiki Ramayana, there is an episode where Lord Hanuman set Lanka ablaze and flew over the sea to return. Hanuman then killed Ahiravan and his brother Mahiravan, liberating Lord Ram and Lakshman. He brought Lord Ram to meet Makardhwaj, who blessed Makardhwaj and made him the ruler of Patal Lok.
