In 16th century Varanasi, when the poet Tulsidas was imprisoned during a difficult Rahu period, Lord Hanuman appeared in his dream. Over 40 days of imprisonment (chalis din in Hindi), Hanuman dictated what would become the Hanuman Chalisa – 40 verses containing the power to neutralize all planetary afflictions.
